Summer Game Fest Stream Overrun with Demands for Destiny 3

Summer Game Fest Stream Overrun with Demands for Destiny 3

Destiny fans aren’t backing down when it comes to demanding Destiny 3. Earlier this week, fans spammed “#WeWantDestiny3” in the chat for PlayStation’s State of Play along with various Destiny-inspired emotes. Now, Bungie fans are storming into Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest event with the same pleas.

The rally comes after Bungie announced that it would be ending support for Destiny 2 after the game’s final update in June. Although Destiny 2 is almost a decade old, it felt rather uncerimonious and it doesn’t seem like it was ever meant to end this early, as Bungie noted it will include content from would-be future updates in the final update.

Bloomberg later reported that Destiny 3 was not in active development and Bungie would be focusing its efforts on supporting Marathon. The studio is also expected to undergo “significant” layoffs, which would make it difficult to develop a brand new Destiny game. Bungie is reportedly interested in developing more Destiny games and will be pitching games set in the universe, in addition to other projects. It remains to be seen what gets greenlit and what the future of Bungie looks like going forward.

Destiny fans been trying to rally support to show Bungie and PlayStation that Destiny 3 is a project worth pursuing. Fans are planning to swarm the servers of Destiny 2 on June 9th, hoping to surpass the all-time peak player count of Marathon to show that Destiny is where Bungie should be focusing its efforts. Whether or not it makes a difference remains to be seen.

A new Destiny game would likely take at least another 4 or 5 years to make, if not longer. It would also cost hundreds of millions of dollars, unless Bungie can find a way to scale down the project to be cheaper and quicker to make. It seems hard to imagine Destiny 3 moving forward without major changes, but crazier things have happened in the gaming industry.
