Doom: The Dark Ages expanding with Revelations DLC in July, plus a free Ripatorium update adding to the game’s customisable arena mode

Doom: The Dark Ages was a fun time, but we’d been wondering about the release window for its DLC (and its very nature) since a Premium Edition was released day one. During the Xbox Games Showcase, Bethesda Softworks and id Software finally unveiled the Revelations DLC.

Though you’ll probably want to pounce on the trailer (catch it below) right away, a Slayers Club blog post gave us extra details, including the bonus of the Ripatorium 3.0 update, “available free for all Doom: The Dark Ages players.” It’s all releasing on 7th July, and those without the game’s more expensive edition can just grab the DLC separately for USD $19.99. As a reminder, Doom: The Dark Ages is available on Game Pass (Ultimate, Premium, and PC).

“Wounded and betrayed, the Slayer is thrust into a merciless purgatory only escapable by confronting haunting truths and forging new strength with the help of a mysterious ally. He must ascend from the prison of his mind and fight an abomination of the gods to set his followers on the path to freedom,” the official description reveals.

While it’s unclear what the timeline of this new piece of content is, the base game left things wide open for a follow-up, so chances are – like with Doom Eternal – Revelations is a direct continuation which will, hopefully, tie into Doom 2016‘s starting point.

Of course, Doom: The Dark Ages – Revelations promises more demons to slay, more levels to explore, and “deeper puzzles” to figure out, but more eye-catching is the mention of “new dimensions to combat with the deadly Chain Spear, offering returning Slayers a uniquely satisfying combat system that rewards mastery with a potent combination of power and mobility.” That sounds a whole lot like Doom Eternal’s combat loop, which was criticised by some diehards but ultimately made (in my opinion) for a far more interesting murder rhythm than The Dark Ages’ parry and block-based danse macabre.

As for the Ripatorium 3.0 update, it comes with “deeper customisation, improved pass code generation, and personal preset options to the game’s customizable arena challenge mode.” Players who own Revelations will get three new additional maps, demons, and fully upgraded new weapons to use in the blood-soaked sandbox of sorts.
