Santa Monica Studio head of creative, Cory Barlog, has confirmed that the next mainline, Kratos-starring God of War will pick up after the events of God of War Laufey.
Talking at a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Barlog revealed that “everything” the team at Santa Monica was doing in the Faye game will “set up and expand what comes next”.
“Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next,” he explained (thanks, IGN).
“Phranque has been around since the beginning. It’s interesting to see how to build this world out. Everything in the game is setting up for something so amazing.”
He added: “Faye is, while it’s a different thing, it’s still part of the larger tapestry of what we truly really want to explore, all of these different characters in there. But there’s always going to be Kratos games, like, throughout the whole history. We’re super excited about that.”
God of War Laufey will release on 16th February 2027. Confirmation came yesterday via an announcement at San Diego Comic-Con. It was revealed as one of the biggest in this year’s Summer Game Fest season, and part of a record-breaking State of Play. The surprise reveal generated plenty of discussion, but most of the talk centred on the game’s new protagonist, Faye. And according to Faye actress Deborah Ann Woll, the idea existed all the way back when the reboot was released in 2018, nearly 10 years ago.
But the star remains gloriously unbothered by the negative criticism the game reveal has triggered. Woll recently said she’s “totally unbothered” by the backlash surrounding the upcoming game because she knows “it’s great”.
What’s definitely not happening with Laufey, however, is a PC port, as Sony no longer intends to release its non-live-service games on PC.
