Today’s Sony State of Play livestream was packed full of new game trailers, reveals, and announcements for PlayStation fans. However, if you took a look at the live chat, you’ll have mostly just seen two groups of angered fans clamouring after discs and Destiny.
Messages like “NO DISC NO BUY” and “WE WANT DESTINY 3” were spammed during the State of Play, from start to finish, in the YouTube live chat. Popping over the Twitch, that stream was endlessly spammed by Destiny emotes, and similar calls for a physical game support.
In case you missed it, this outrage is a collision between two separate PR disasters for Sony. The first is tied to Sony’s announcement that physical game support will stop starting in 2028, meaning only digital codes will be available for games on its platform starting in January of that year.
This proved immediately controversial, though Sony has pledged to stay the course despite the palpable anger from PlayStation players. It even recently argued that “reasonable consumers” know they don’t actually own the digital games they buy in an ongoing class action lawsuit.
The second controversy stems from the end of major support for Destiny 2 and major staffing cuts at Bungie. Despite a resurgence of support from Destiny 2 players in the wake of this news, Bungie seems committed to Marathon despite its struggles. As a result, fans are pushing hard for Destiny 3 despite how seemingly unlikely it is to be greenlit.
With regards to PlayStation’s discless future, outcry on social media has persisted ever since that announcement. Even if the data suggests the vast majority of purchases are made in digital form rather than physical, the strength of feeling here is significant, which many would argue is for good reason. These protests will likely remain a problem for Sony for some time.
