Blizzard reportedly partnering with Arc Raiders owner Nexon to revive StarCraft as a shooter

Don’t count on the rumoured StarCraft game being a Destiny-like, says Jason Schreier

The rumblings about the next StarCraft game continue to get louder. Following recent reports that Korean developer-publisher Nexon had acquired the rights to develop a sequel in the sci-fi franchise, the official StarCraft 2 website started displaying visual glitches, clearly signaling some sort of impending announcement.

Now, thanks to new information, we may have some idea of what kind of game it’s going to be. According to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, we should rule out the possibility of the next StarCraft game being a Destiny-style live service shooter.

Schreier revealed this tidbit in a recent chat with former Polygon guides producer Ryan Gilliam, though without saying more besides. “I wouldn’t count on this StarCraft game being a Destiny-like, I’ll say that,” said Schreier.

This was a particularly disappointing revelation for the host, who wanted another well-funded studio to carry Destiny’s mantle. It is also notable that Blizzard, a developer of several mega-successful live service games, seemingly isn’t making one in this instance – at least, from what we’re working with here.

So if not Destiny-like, what recent game can the StarCraft project be compared to? Well, according to Windows Central editor Jez Corden, it may be a Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2-like and seemingly even takes cues from the Far Cry series.

“From what I saw it’s more Space Marine 2 / Far Cry kinda adjacent, but dunno for sure what the overall gameplay formula will be,” Corden wrote on X.

The Far Cry name drop is curious, as it’s long been reported that former Far Cry boss Dan Hay is helming a StarCraft shooter at Blizzard. Space Marine 2 and Far Cry don’t share many similarities, so it’s unclear exactly what features Corden is referring to there.

Whatever Blizzard has in store for us will be demystified this weekend at BlizzCon. The show takes place 12th-13th September, and given recent teases, the opening ceremony is everyone’s best guess as to when the game will be unveiled.
