Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Is Getting a Free Update Featuring New Dungeon, Enemies, Bosses, and Costumes

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has officially sold five million copies since launch, and developer Sandfall Interactive is celebrating by teasing an upcoming free update that will include a new dungeon, enemies, bosses, and more.

Sandfall said the update was currently in development for all platforms but failed to specify when we might see it. “We hope the update we’re working on will act as a ‘thank you’ to those fans for their support – please be patient while our team work hard on bringing you something worth the wait,” said creative director Guillaume Broche.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 free update contents:

  • A new, playable environment, taking the characters of Expedition 33 to a brand-new location with new enemy encounters and surprises to discover.
  • Challenging, new boss battles for late-game players to overcome.
  • New costumes for each member of the Expedition, giving even more customization options for players throughout their adventure.
  • New text and UI game localizations into Czech, Ukrainian, Latin American Spanish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Thai and Indonesian, bringing the total number of supported languages to 19.
  • Plus, even more surprises fans can look forward to.

Sandfall also failed to reveal further details about what sort of story the new update might tell, but it did share a single image that offers a few clues:

Without getting too into spoiler territory, the image above seems to depict a child’s playroom, and has a child’s sketch of what seems to be Verso riding atop Esquie. If you’ve beaten the game (or even just gotten to Act 3) you probably have a bit more clarity about what this is teasing, but suffice to say this new content may give us a bit more detail on Verso and Esquie’s history together and what they were up to during Verso’s childhood.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is an incredible RPG, with Sandfall earning a 9/10 from us in its debut game. We wrote: “Wearing its inspirations on its sleeve, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 paints itself into the pantheon of great RPGs with a brilliant combat system and a gripping, harrowing story.” And even beyond the free update, it sounds like we should expect more from this universe in the future, with Broche saying that Clair Obscur was a “franchise name” and Expedition 33 was just one story they were teling in that world.
