CD Projekt Red is “targeting” a 2028 release date for The Witcher 4, per a new update from the developer

CD Projekt Red has posted a quick update about The Witcher 4, narrowing down the release date for its upcoming RPG sequel. “This is our biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date,” says CD Projekt Red joint-CEO Michal Nowakowski, shortly before confirming the studio is “targeting” a release date in 2028. Bear in mind, then, that this could always slip.

“I know it’s a bit of a wait, and you’d love to play it sooner–but let the team cook. It will be worth the wait,” he says. He gives us a few more bytes of information, too; noting the team is “hard at work on a brand new saga” with “more than 500 developers” working on the game (one of which, we think, is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s cinematic animator). Nowakowski reiterates the game will have a huge, immersive open world, intense action-packed gameplay, and a deep, impactful story. Certainly sounds like The Witcher to me.

Meanwhile, all eyes are on The Witcher 3‘s new DLC, Songs of the Past. “We’ve got a lot of the expansion to show off, including a taste of its dark story, and the new continent it will bring.” Gamescom will be the first time the studio is showing off this unexpected DLC – and I’ll be seeing the game and chatting to the devs at the show. Expect more news later this week.

The Witcher 3’s expansion Songs of the Past is being made by as many people as made The Witcher 3 – potentially even more.

What else do we know about Songs of the Past? Well, we know that the expansion will star Geralt rather than Ciri, who’ll lead The Witcher 4, by the way, but we don’t know anything about timelines. It makes sense for Ciri to be involved somehow given the expansion’s positioning before The Witcher 4, but whether it takes place after the events of The Witcher 3 or before them, we’re currently none the wiser. Maybe there are flashbacks to a “Past” referenced by the title, or maybe it takes place in the past. We’re due to find out more later in the summer.

CD Projekt Red also teases “one or two surprises” coming elsewhere at the show. It remains to be seen what these are.
