First Look and Where to Buy

First Look and Where to Buy

One of the most hotly anticipated Magic: The Gathering Universe’s Beyond sets, The Hobbit, is now up for preorder online. The Hobbit will release on August 14, 2026, following up on the other big Universe’s Beyond set releasing in the summer, Marvel Super Heroes.

Preorders for The Hobbit crossover set are live now at Amazon, but certain items that are already out of stock are hard to come by, so let’s take a quick look at what is still available.

The new Universe’s Beyond set includes Play and Collector Boosters, a Gift Bundle, a standard Bundle, Draft Night, and two Scene Boxes.

At the time of publication, the Gift Bundle and Collector Boosters are out of stock at Amazon, so you may have to try your luck at trusted online resale sites like TCGplayer, or your local game store.

Those at MagicCon: Las Vegas got the first look at the new set, but Wizards of the Coast has also blessed the rest of us with plenty more information to dig through as well.

Here’s some of the most important info that I’ve found to note down:

  • The Hobbit (HOB) is legal in all MTG formats.
  • The Hobbit’s Eternal-legal set (HOC) is legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage, and individual cards are also legal where already available in other formats.
  • Prerelease Events: August 7–13

Our first look at MTG x The Hobbit also went live with preorders for the upcoming Reality Fracture set, alongside new additions to the Foundations line, both of which are coming in October this year.

If you’re disappointed by the lack of Commander Decks in The Hobbit, then I’m sure you’ll be pleased to see the new additions in these standard Magic sets instead.

For now, let’s take another in depth look at what’s up for grabs for MTG x The Hobbit.

The Hobbit – Play Booster Box (30 Packs)

The Hobbit – Play Booster Box (30 Packs)

What will probably be the most popular option when it comes to preorders, The Hobbit Play Booster Box includes 30 packs for the new set, and is priced at $209.70.

That’s fairly standard for new Universes Beyond sets, but if Marvel Super Heroes is anything to go by, we may see this drop further to $189.99 before release day.

The Hobbit - Collector Booster Box (12 Packs)

There’s also the Collector Boosters, for those who are serious about hunting down the latest and greatest cards from the new set. If you’ve got the cash, I won’t judge.

It’s $499.99 to preorder the booster box with 12 packs, or $37.99 for a single pack. Both are currently out of stock, so you may need to check out TCGplayer or your local game store to see if you have more luck between now and release day on August 14.

The Hobbit – Bundle

Likely another incredibly popular option will be The Hobbit’s bundle package, priced at $69.99. While it’s not a super affordable starter set, it is much cheaper compared to picking up the booster boxes at $200+.

It includes, 9 Play Boosters, 1 alt-art Traditional Foil card, 19 Traditional Foil Land cards (9 with full art), 15 regular Land cards (5 with full art), 1 oversized Spindown life counter, 1 card storage box, and 2 reference cards.

The Hobbit – Scene Boxes – Crack the Plates and Treasures of Smaug

The Hobbit – Scene Box – Crack the Plates

We’re getting into serious collector territory here, as while Scene Boxes are a lot of fun, it’s not the most popular choice for those who just want to pick up a few packs and play the new set.

Still, I like ’em! They really make you appreciate the card art, and boy, do these new cards look absolutely incredible.

Releasing at the same time as the rest of the set, you’ve got two Scene Boxes to choose from, ‘Crack the Plates’ and ‘Treasures of Smaug’.

Both cost $41.99 and can be preordered right now from Amazon.

The Hobbit – Gift Bundle

The Hobbit Gift Bundle is a tidy set, and is unfortuntely incredible popular already. This one is sold out / extremely hard to come by at the time of writing.

I’d keep an eye on Amazon and TCGplayer for the time being. If you can pick it up at MSRP, $89.99, you’re laughing, otherwise you may have to resort to paying above at beyond on resale markets.

So why is it so popular? That’s likely because it includes a Collector Booster, which as I mentioned, are also hotly sought after, and already out of stock as well.

The Hobbit – Draft Night

Another set that’s been hit by the curse of a Collector Booster inclusion, the Draft Night set costs $119.99, and is also out of stock everywhere at the moment.

Same as before, keep an eye out for stock, and we’ll do the same and try to let you know if anything crops up. Keep it locked to @IGNFinds on Instagram and X/Twitter as well, where we’ll endevour to update you with the latest stock updates from now until release day.
