God of War Laufey studio hints at 2027 release window following tweet that assures players it “will be available on disc”

We may not know the precise release date of the upcoming God of War Laufey, but a new tweet suggests we’ll get it before the end of 2027.

In a tweet shared over the weekend, presumably to quieten the backlash around Sony’s shock news that it is halting physical media as of January 2028, God of War developer Santa Monica Studio revealed the next GoW game “will be available on disc”.

While this clearly isn’t a specific date, by telling us that God of War Laufey will be available “on disc”, the studio is hinting that we’ll get it before Sony halts production on discs, which is currently slated for January 2028.

We also learned that there’ll also be a God of War Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con later this month, featuring game director Ariel Lawrence, moderator and head of creative Cory Barlog, and members of the cast.

The God of War Laufey reveal was one of the biggest in this year’s Summer Game Fest season – and part of a record-breaking State of Play. The surprise reveal generated plenty of discussion but most of the talk centered on the game’s new protagonist, Faye. And according to Faye actress Deborah Ann Woll, the idea existed all the way back when the reboot was released in 2018, nearly 10 years ago.

God of War Laufey is in development exclusively for PS5, and though it does not have a release date, it’s been suggested that it may be targeting a 2027 release. What’s definitely not happening, however, is a PC port, as Sony no longer intends to release its non-live-service games on PC.

Sony’s shocking decision to end all physical media on PlayStation, including for games not published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, was announced on 1st July. All releases from January 2028 onwards will be digital-only, including code-in-the-box-style options at retail.
