Is episodic gaming back on the map? Ex-Wolf Among Us devs’ superhero workplace comedy Dispatch sells big to become a well-deserved smash

Dispatch, the acclaimed superhero workplace comedy from a group of former Telltale Games veterans, has sold over 1m copies in just 10 day – an impressive feat considering even the big players in the episodic narrative adventure genre have struggled to make much of an impact in recent years.

Dispatch – which very much follows the classic Telltale choice-and-consequence formula – tells the story of Robert Robertson, a sort-of-superhero (played by Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul), who takes an office job as a superhero dispatcher after his inherited mecha-suit breaks down. It’s the work of AdHoc Studio, founded by primarily by former Telltale Games staff, whose credits include the much-loved Tales from the Borderlands and The Wolf Among Us.

Like those Telltale classics, Dispatch is being released episodically, one new instalment arriving each week following an initial two-episode start on 22nd October. That means we’re now four episodes into its eight-episode run. And things are going well! AdHoc announced Dispatch’s 1m sales milestone in a post on social media. “Two days, 80 million copies sold. Would’ve been nice,” it joked. “We sold one million in ten days though. Still pretty good.”

Eurogamer’s Robert Purchese had a chat with AdHoc prior to Dispatch’s release, discussing, among other things, the studio’s approach to the episodic release model and Critical Role’s involvement in the game – a partnership which likely helped give Dispatch some additional exposure. They also discussed The Wolf Among Us 2, which the studio was involved with at one time. And if you’re curious about that, Bertie has you covered elsewhere.
