If you’re familiar with the lineage of Rebel Wolves, the studio behind the recently-released The Blood of Dawnwalker, it may not surprise you to learn that a lot of the game’s players are also fans of a certain other medieval fantasy RPG.
According to new data by industry analysts at Alinea Analytics, nearly 58 percent of Dawnwalker players have also played The Witcher 3. Rebel Wolves, of course, is a team made up of many former Witcher developers and CD Projekt Red alumni. The games share a few other similarities, too, such as being centred around a protagonist with superpowers they didn’t ask for in a world that doesn’t always like or appreciate them.
Analyst Rhys Elliott also revealed in the same report that Poland is the game’s second-largest market on Steam, with 11 percent of players. The US is far ahead at number one, though, with 34 percent. It’s clear local players showed up, given that both Rebel Wolves and CDPR are Polish studios.
Speaking of shared audiences, The Blood of Dawnwalker’s players cross-over with a number of other recent releases in the same or similar genres. According to the report, 13 percent of players have played Mortal Shell 2, and 9 percent have played Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
Rebel Wolves recently announced Dawnwalker has sold over one million copies in its first three days on sale. Alinea estimates 410,000 of those sales were made on Steam, noting it “also did well” on GOG, the DRM-free PC game store. Given how large the game’s PC audience appears to be, Dawnwalker has a growing mod scene, though the most popular mod so far removes its main time mechanic.
In the Eurogamer review of The Blood of Dawnwalker, Bertie was happy with how the game used said time mechanic to create meaningful stakes, even if that brilliance doesn’t always come across elsewhere in the game.
