League of Legends Classic has been revealed in earnest by Riot Games. A recreation of an older MOBA experience, League Classic is taking core moments from the early seasons and merging them together, though some players are already raising eyebrows at one aspect: the champion skins.
This new (or old) spin on League of Legends is launching for the whole world on the 29th July, though early games are being played on the game’s PBE (or: public beta environment). In it, we can see the old Summoner’s Rift map in all its glory, removed abilities and items running rampant, and… champions with their modern skins. In League of Legends Classic, the original look for playable characters must be unlocked.
Riot Games does provide avenues to do this without spending any money. League Classic features the Classic Path and Classic Progression Track. The Path is essentially a battle pass, with both free and premium versions offering rewards for those who progress through it. This includes a Classic skin token, though they appear scarcely. As for the Track, three Classic skin vouchers are included, so that comes to four in total between the two.
Some freebies are nice, and should cover the main champions a player would use in League Classic. However, this does leave the vast majority of the champions present in League of Legends Classic stuck with their modern models. With 60 champions present at launch, those who would want to play the remaining 56 champions with their classic look will have to buy a token from the store. This costs 500 Riot Points, or roughly $5.
The response to this reality from the community has been loud and largely negative across League of Legends social hubs. Take the League of Legends Subreddit, on which user Prime_Desire wrote:
“Charging for Classic Skins is genuinely wild,” they write. “We are being asked to pay for what used to be the default look of the game. Under no circumstances should the old models be paywalled… especially when most champions in the mode still appear with their modern models anyway. Even Blizzard wasn’t this greedy with WoW Classic.”
That comparison to World of Warcraft Classic comes up often in these complaints, as a similar example of a company delving back into its history for a nostalgic re-release. World of Warcraft – supported by a paid subscription it’s worth noting – did not charge players extra to jump into Classic servers. Anyone playing modern World of Warcraft could make the leap over at their pleasure.
For League of Legends Classic, nostalgia is offered to players for free. However, as many point out, skins bought for League of Legends Classic cannot be used in the modern version of League of Legends. So, if you were to spend $5 on classic Sion for example, that skin would be unavailable to use on Sion in the contemporary version of the game.
“I’d have no problem paying for them if I could use them in normal league too”, wrote user Seby44. Lucky_Pangolin_3760 responded with: “Me neither, because then it would be an actual skin.” Indeed, the fact that the base versions of champions are being sold at all is proving a sticking point for many players. After all, these weren’t bought back in the day, they were just how the champions looked.
One could argue that these sorts of big releases that dive into old school versions of the game take time, and resources, and most importantly money. While the game’s executive producer has revealed it was first prototyped in a Riot Games hackathon, the difficulty in bringing back these older aspects of the game has not been revealed in full. We do know that some champions – like Sion – have had VFX and animation updates to match their Classic move list. Whether these were created from scratch or a mishmash of old files is unclear.
As a result of this blending of old and new in League Classic, players have been keen to point out discrepancies between the game they remember and what they can actually play. One user – Denzien2 – feels as though it “sits in the uncanny valley”, pointing to how Ryze’s auto-attack animation in League of Classic is champion’s modern auto attack, not the original auto attach present years ago in the era league Classic is attempting to harken back to. Likewise, all the champions use modern voice lines in the PBE right now, rather than those present years ago.
If there is a silver lining here, it’s that League of Legends Classic does not appear to be the short-term event Riot Games usually includes in its MOBA. With the fanfare this is getting, it seems as though League Classic will be present for the long haul – one would certainly hope so given the microtransaction model present in the game. As such, there is room for further tweaking to champion animations, VFX, and more. How much of that has to be made from scratch, or dug up from ancient hard drives, likely standing as a major barrier here.
So while League of Legends Classic is without a doubt a large celebratory moment for long-term fans of the MOBA, there are doubtless early gripes and frustrations muddying the excitement a bit. Whether Riot will backtrack its approach to the champion’s base appearance remains the pressing question as the majority of the playerbase prepare to give it a try later this month.
