Nintendo has reportedly requested hardware suppliers produce 25m Switch 2 consoles by the end of March 2026, as the company prepares for a record-breaking first year of sales.
Nintendo is anticipating demand for Switch 2 to persist over the Christmas period, Bloomberg has reported, with sales of roughly 20m Switch 2 units expected this fiscal year based on shipping estimates, according to the outlet’s sources.
At the start of 2025, analysts estimated sales of 20m consoles this fiscal year, while Nintendo itself predicted a far more conservative 15m console sales in its financial report in May, ahead of the console’s launch.
Nintendo’s prediction was on par with, if slightly ahead of, sales of the first Switch console, which sold 14.87m units in its first year on sale.
Yet the Switch 2 sold 3.5m units worldwide in its first four days on sale, becoming Nintendo’s fast-selling piece of hardware ever. In the US specifically, the console is the fastest-selling video game hardware device ever, usurping the PS4; while in the UK it was reportedly Nintendo’s biggest launch but still behind PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
According to Bloomberg, shares in Nintendo have risen by more than 50 percent and the company is expected to report 68 percent growth in quarterly revenue in its next earnings call next month, along with an updated annual forecast of Switch 2 sales.
News of the Switch 2’s success comes despite criticism of its high price and the cost of games and accessories. The launch in the US was also impacted by tariffs, with Nintendo stating in May it would consider a price rise if the situation worsened.
