PlayStation is pulling “previously purchased” digital movies from users’ libraries

Sony has written to PlayStation customers to advise that hundreds of “previously purchased” digital movies previously available via its online store will “be removed” from video libraries later this year.

In a message to players, Sony said that as of 1st September, due to “content licensing arrangements”, hundreds of Studio Canal movies – including Alan Partridge, Terminator 2, Total Recall, Evil Dead, and The Deer Hunter – will no longer be accessible.

According to a screenshot of the email shared online, Sony didn’t even apologise to players about the situation:

“As of 1 September 2026 due to our content licensing arrangements, you will no longer be able to watch any of your previously purchased Studio Canal content and the content will be removed from your video library,” the email stated, before directing players to a list of affected titles.

The PlayStation website lists every one of the 551 premium movies that will disappear from libraries in September.

While many unhappy players in the comments are raging against the decision, the unceremonious rug-pull can happen at any time with almost all digital products across almost all devices – the details are usually buried in the terms and conditions you agree to each time you “purchase” a digital product.

It’s because of this that GTA 6 players are incredibly disappointed that there may never be a physical disc version of Grand Theft Auto 6.
