Sea of Stars: Sunset Edition is the hit retro-inspired RPG’s final update, but it “sets the stage for the adventure to come”

Sabotage Studio has revealed it’s planning to move on from Sea of Stars after nearly three years of post-launch support which has included substantial free content updates. But don’t worry; there’s life beyond this Sunset Edition patch.

In a new video shared by the developers (watch it below), it’s confirmed the team has been working on Project Sparrow – its next game, probably set in the same universe – for “a little over a year now”, with the full production phase now reached. In fact, it appears Sunset Edition’s key feature is a tease of what’s set to come in the future.

Sea of Stars: Sunset Edition – which appears to be the game’s new full title on storefronts – introduces a new cinematic intro, the “highest budget one yet, which puts faces on heroes from the past known until now only by name.” It gives players some much-needed background, but it also “sets the stage for the adventure to come”. A key flashback found later in the game is also expanded now.

On the gameplay side of things, the Normal and Hard modes have been rebalanced. More specifically, the developers explained that “splitting the attributes of the Tactician’s Mettle relic into two separate relics (Tactician’s Mettle and Ray of Sunset) enables a “Normal” experience that demands more grit.” To celebrate, the game’s price has been slashed in half “for the very first time”.

Sea of Stars is currently available on PC, PS4/5, Xbox One & Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 1/2, and even iOS and Android devices. The retro-inspired, turn-based RPG outsold its 2023 units projections after just one week of sales. By late 2024, it had crossed 6m unique players, though the game has also been available on subscription services like Game Pass.

Eurogamer’s four-star review of Sea of Stars called it “a more-than-welcome addition to the contemporary throwback RPG club” that’s filled with smart and modern DNA. “Sitting with the game longer than I needed to revealed many things, but mainly that when something is made with love, that love surfaces in the smallest flourishes,” wrote Kaan Serin.
