Sony assures developers they can still order some games on disc after 2027 – but there’s a catch

Sony is reportedly informing developers that they can still order disc games beyond January 2028 providing the game releases before its cut-off date.

On 1st July, Sony announced plans to end the production of discs for PlayStation games, effective January 2028, after which point, PlayStation games will only be available digitally. Notably, PlayStation games will continue to be sold at retail, just without a physical disc. The news all but confirms the PS6 will not have a disc drive.

Now, as reported by Game File, Sony is seemingly looking to quell concerns from game makers, telling publishers they “will still be able to place re-orders for existing PlayStation disc games” for any game released before January 2028.

NEW: Sony’s private message to publisher/dev partners about discs also cited a consumer “shift”

But it included more explicit confirmation that, after Jan 2028, partners “will still be able to place re-orders for existing PlayStation disc games”

Publishers were also told that PlayStation would “provide [them] with the opportunity to release new games at retail using digital codes”, suggesting you’ll be able to purchase game codes outside of Sony’s closed online store.

Sony is still rationing its supply of attachable disc drives despite announcing plans to end production of physical discs for PlayStation games because of changing “consumer trends”.
