Steins;Gate ReBoot Finally Has a Release Date in Japan

Steins;Gate Re:Boot finally has a release date in Japan. The new Steins;Gate remake is coming to PC and current-gen consoles, including Nintendo Switch 2, on August 20.

The release date was confirmed by studio MAGES through a new opening movie on YouTube. The studio also released a preview of the remake’s new ‘E-mote’ system. It has not been confirmed whether the North American version of the game will release on the same day, but the official website indicates the remake will support subtitles in English and Chinese.

The game’s website currently lists a number of both digital and physical editions. The standard digital edition will be 6,380 yen, while the most expensive limited edition is listed at 12,980 yen, up to 14,080 yen on Switch 2. The website also confirms that physical editions will be available for PS5 and Switch 2, with the latter including a game-key card.

Originally announced back in 2024, the Steins;Gate remake will feature “updated visuals, refined UI, and a revitalized story.” Visual changes include character redesigns, with new outfits and accessories designed to bring a “contemporary flair.” The game will also feature re-recorded voice lines as well as new background music from composer Takeshi Abo.

One major update is that the remake will introduce a new ending scenario in addition to the six endings available in the original game. One producer has already revealed that the new ending will feature a new ending song.

This is already the second remake of the visual novel, which was originally a sequel to Chaos;Head in the Science Adventure series. The first remake, Steins;Gate Elite, released in 2019, roping in cutscenes from the acclaimed anime adaptation. The Nintendo Switch version of Elite came with a special bonus, 8-Bit ADV Steins;Gate, but it remains to be seen whether the 8-bit game or a similar special feature will make a return in the Re:Boot.

The visual novel puts the player in control of Rintaro Okabe, an eccentric young inventor who’s trying to crack the code of time travel with group of (also eccentric) students. Like most visual novels, major gameplay elements are based on dialogue options and decision-making. The Steam listing notes that you can anticipate between 30 and 50 hours of gameplay in the new version.
