The rumoured Resident Evil 1 Remake is back in the news again, thanks to new information from a longtime insider. Dusk Golem, a noted horror game and Resident Evil leaker, shared an update on their social media about the state of the project.
According to them, a remake of the original Resident Evil game “started early production nearly a year ago”. The insider shared this update on their X account, adding that the project is expected to enter full production once development is done on Resident Evil Veronica.
Veronica was announced in June, and is set for release sometime in 2027. The game is itself a remake of Resident Evil – Code: Veronica. Judging by Capcom’s usual cadence of alternating between a remake and a mainline sequel in Resident Evil releases, the publisher could be aiming to release the next remake sometime in 2029.
That, however, may not be the Resident Evil 1 Remake in question, as Dusk Golem later added that a remake of Resident Evil Zero entered full production “in late 2022”, potentially positioning it as the next remake to be released post-Veronica.
As the insider notes, pre-production is the stage of development when a small core team takes on initial concepting and prototyping, before later expanding to bring in more people and properly get started on creating assets and turning concepts into mechanics, art and so on. Considering the Resident Evil 1 Remake only entered pre-production in “August-September” last year, it will likely be a while before Capcom officially announces it.
A remake of the original Resident Evil has been rumoured for a while. Last we heard about it was in May 2024, when it was believed to have been planned for release to coincide with the series’ 30th anniversary in 2026. This has not come to pass, of course, and we instead got a new mainline entry in the critically acclaimed and commercially successful Resident Evil Requiem.
Dusk Golem has something of a spotty track record. They’ve had more hits than misses, such as getting the timing of several Resident Evil releases correctly, and revealing the existence of several in-development projects.
Capcom actually remade the first Resident Evil on Nintendo GameCube, six years after the game’s initial release on PlayStation. Capcom later remastered that remake in 2015 for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. While that remake remained faithful to the original, a modern remake is expected to be more akin to the Resident Evil 2 Remake, changing the camera to third-person and expanding the game with more features.
