Ubisoft reportedly has yet another Far Cry game in development, but at least this one doesn’t appear to be in trouble

The Far Cry series has been dormant for much longer than Ubisoft would’ve liked. The company never stopped working on new Far Cry games, however, they’ve just never seen the light of day. This next title may be different.

According to a new Insider Gaming report, a new Far Cry project with the codename Kodiak recently entered development after passing the conception stage. The game is in the works at Vantage Studios, the new subsidiary established by Ubisoft and Tencent to focus on its biggest franchises, including Far Cry.

Kodiak is described as an open-world first-person shooter that takes place in a world where “player interactions and player-driven stories take center stage”.

The next mainline Far Cry game – Far Cry 7 – is reportedly a different project that itself has been in the works for years at Ubisoft. That one is codenamed Blackbird, but because it reportedly ran into development problems, it kept getting pushed back internally.

Blackbird has seemingly recovered, however, and is now back on track. This will be a traditional single-player game, but the report says it will also have a multiplayer component, though that could simply be referring to co-op – a feature the series has had in the past.

According to the report, Vantage co-CEO Charlie Guillemot described Blackbird in a recent internal interview as “honestly impressive”, and is said to consider it the first game of multiple titles in a series.

None of these games have been publicly announced, and we have no idea when we could see some of them released. Blackbird appears to be the furthest along in development, so that could be the next title Ubisoft properly unveils.

The most recent entry in the Far Cry series has been 2021’s Far Cry 6. It will be five-years-old this October.
