The sequel to last year’s box office smash A Minecraft Movie – now officially known as A Minecraft Movie Squared – will be released next year, on 23rd July.

The news was shared with a little behind the scenes promo snippet from actors Jack Black and Jason Momoa, who are both reprising their roles from the first film. Black played Steve in the original movie, while Momoa played Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison.

Comedian Matt Berry, who played Nitwit in the first film, is also back for A Minecraft Movie Squared, though in a currently undisclosed role. “I’ve been told I am not allowed to tell you who I am playing in this new film,” Berry said in the behind the scenes promo, before getting distracted by a sweater vest. Make of that what you will.

Joining these returning actors for A Minecraft Movie Squared is Kirsten Dunst, with the Wimbledon actress starring as Alex. Alex is one of the nine default player skins in Minecraft, and is often shown alongside Steve in promotional artwork and such. It has long been expected that Alex would play a key part in the Minecraft Movie sequel, having cameoed in the first film’s post-credits scene. We didn’t see Alex’s face at this time, however she introduced herself to Black’s Steve after the end of the film.

But will A Minecraft Movie Square manage to reach the same heights as its predecessor? The first Minecraft Movie debuted last April, and was a bumper success, generating $301m worldwide on its first weekend alone.

It also sparked a viral trend which saw some viewers going feral, screaming out loud mid-film while launching their popcorn into the air when Steve shouted “chicken jockey”, as Momoa’s character got ready to fight a baby zombie riding on the back of a chicken. Along with cinemas playing a polite reminder that people need to be considerate of others around them, Black himself popped up at one screening, asking that viewers don’t behave like animals when watching the film.
