As HBO plots a Baldur’s Gate 3 sequel series, the future of the property seems unclear, with BG3 developer Larian Studios choosing to pursue a new Divinity instead. A new report is now suggesting what’s next might be a return to the past. Yes, Baldur’s Gate 2 is getting a remake if the rumours are true.
PC Gamer (hat tip to IGN) first broke the news. According to its sources, ex-BioWare veteran and BG2 co-lead designer Kevin Martens – who later worked on Diablo 3 – is part of the project after contributing to Wizards of the Coast and Archetype Entertainment’s Exodus, an upcoming Mass Effect-like action RPG.
“According to a source familiar with the project, Martens is already working on the Baldur’s Gate 2 remake. If both games are making a comeback – which makes a lot more sense than just the second game, given that it’s a direct continuation of BG1—this suggests that the remakes are being developed concurrently,” PC Gamer’s Fraser Brown explained. While the report is only confident about the existence of a Baldur’s Gate 2 remake, it states a full rebuild of both titles could be happening.
Gameplay and release window details are unclear, meaning the games could return with a more traditional take on the original combat systems versus BG3’s turn-based approach. At the time of writing, “Hasbro says it won’t comment on rumours, and Kevin Martens did not respond in time for publication.”
Last month, Hasbro and Wizards, who own the Dungeons & Dragons – and thus Baldur’s Gate – IP, cancelled a single-player action-adventure D&D game made by Star Wars Jedi director Stig Asmussen. Other games based on the property, like Warlock, are in development, but nothing has been said officially about a potential Baldur’s Gate 4 by a different studio yet.
