After a slow start, Alan Wake 2 is finally doing the numbers for Remedy and has hit another major milestone

Remedy Entertainment has revealed updated sales data for Alan Wake 2, which has now exceeded 3 million copies.

The developer-publisher shared the news in its half-year financial report covering January to June, where it announced the investigative horror shooter reached the 3 million sales milestone during the second quarter of the year.

The last time Remedy offered an Alan Wake 2 sales update was in February last year, when the company announced it had passed 2 million copies sold and started turning a profit. One year before that, it revealed the game had almost recouped most of its development and marketing budget.

Despite being hailed as Remedy’s fastest-selling game, Alan Wake 2 only managed to sell a million copies at launch, taking years to recoup its development costs and still longer to become profitable. The Epic Games-funded project remains exclusive to the Epic Games Store on PC, and many argue its absence from Steam has hurt its sales potential.

Positive as the Alan Wake 2 news may be, the financial report shows declines almost across the board for Remedy. Revenue, profit, and cashflow have all fallen. The company said that is expected, as it was a period of spending on the development and marketing of Control Resonant, not to mention continued funding of its other projects.

Remedy currently has three projects in various stages of development. Control Resonant is nearing the end of its development, the Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes remain in full production, while a mysterious third unannounced project is in the “production readiness” stage.

Control Resonant is, unsurprisingly, the developer’s main focus at the moment. The stylised action game is set for release 24th September on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The company also revealed anticipation for Control Resonant has boosted sales of the original game over the second quarter, beating its record for the same period the previous year.

Remedy’s new CEO, who took on the role in February, recently said he believes Alan Wake and Control “should have sold more”, and that the studio “hasn’t achieved half of the potential in terms of the products that we make”.
