Fable Director Says ‘We Don’t Run Scared of Other Big Games’ But is Relieved to Be Launching Away From GTA 6

Fable is set to release on February 23, 2027, and developer Playground Games is feeling pretty confident that it will be ready for that date.

Speaking to IGN at gamescom, the RPG’s director, Ralph Fulton, told us that he feels “great about it.”

“I think the rationale behind moving us out of October, the date that we were in previously, is pretty apparent to everybody,” he continues. “I feel great about that. I mean, I was really looking forward to shipping this game this year. I didn’t want to have to do another January 1st speech to the team about ‘this is the year we ship Fable’, which I’m now going to have to do. But the rationale for it is absolutely sound. I’m glad that we’re avoiding that chaotic window.”

This is actually the first we’ve officially heard about the game having previously been earmarked for an October 2026. Prior to the announcement of the February date, we had only been given a window of this “fall”.

It makes sense that Playground’s reimagining of the formerly Microsoft-exclusive series decided to move out of October. Fulton isn’t wrong about it being a chaotic time of year with another Xbox Games Studio release, Gears of War E-Day coming that month, along with the likes of PS5 console exclusive, Phantom Blade Zero.

Those games are sandwiched between a packed September involving the likes of Marvel’s Wolverine, Control Resonant, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and Silent Hill: Townfall to name but a few. That doesn’t mean February of next year is looking any clearer, though, with many other game developers seemingly having had a similar idea to Fable. Indeed, Playground’s RPG will launch against God of War Laufey, Metro 2039, and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis.

Fulton isn’t worried about the beginning of next year suddenly looking like another busy period for big games releases, however. “People keep saying that to me, but we don’t run scared of other big games,” says Fulton.

“We’re a big game ourselves. We hold ourselves to high standards. I’m happy to go toe-to-toe with a bunch of other games. There’s just one that I’m happy to avoid entirely.”

That game is, of course, GTA 6. Stay tuned tonight for more on Rockstar’s upcoming return to Vice City, where we’ll have plenty of reaction and insight alongside the Extended Look debuting on Netflix.
