Genesis’ Voice Actor Leaves Final Fantasy 7 Fans Convinced a Dirge of Cerberus Remake Is on the Way

Final Fantasy fans are convinced a Dirge of Cerberus remake could be on the horizon after one Japan’s most famous rockstars, Gackt, posted a photo of himself cosplaying as Crisis Core’s Genesis.

Gackt famously voiced Genesis Rhapsodos in the Japanese dubs of both Crisis Core and the not-so-secret secret ending in Dirge of Cerberus. It’s fairly well-known that he helped inspire and even design the character, who’s been a fan-favorite since his first appearance nearly twenty years ago.

While Gackt reprised his role for the Crisis Core remake in 2022, not much has been seen of Genesis since then — until now.

On August 6, 2026, Gackt posted an Instagram reel showing himself decked out in a Genesis cosplay (though, can it truly be called a cosplay if Gackt is literally him?) with his song Redemption playing in the background. Eagle-eyed fans will have clocked that Redemption was written and performed by Gackt as the official theme song for Dirge of Cerberus, and it’s causing a frenzy as fans speculate about news of a possible remake of the Vincent Valentine-focused game.

It’s one of the few remaining Final Fantasy VII spinoff titles left that hasn’t received an official remake, and it’s one that could certainly do with a refresh. While it’s status as a beloved entry in the FF7 universe is unquestionable, its control scheme and overall gameplay looks a bit rough in the rear-view, making the idea of a remake pretty appealing.

One fan noticed a similar pattern in Gackt’s Instagram posts that lined up with his previous social media activity leading up to the Crisis Core remake. As told by ‘nibelbound’ on X, Gackt posted about returning to a studio he hadn’t visited in “over ten years” to perform some voice recordings just four days before the Crisis Core remake was announced at Summer Game Fest 2022.

Of course, a Dirge of Cerberus remake isn’t the only idea sparking a furor among Final Fantasy Fans; others speculate that this means Genesis could make an appearance in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, which is set to be shown off at Gamescom 2026.

It wouldn’t be a complete reach to think so, either; Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi recently doubled down on connecting all the Final Fantasy VII spinoffs into the game’s ending, making special mention of Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus.

“There are a lot of other titles within the VII universe. So, we’re talking about Advent Children, we’re talking about Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core. And we want to bring all of those in and make sure we’re not leaving those out,” he said in an interview with YouTuber Ashif’s Release Notes at Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival Berlin 2026.

“And then on top of that, once we have all of those in place, we’re looking towards the ending. And then the question is, what kind of ending are we going to head for in Revelation that still has those ties? And I think that’s something that I really hope players will look forward to finding out.”

With Dirge of Cerberus’s storyline getting some time to shine in Ever Crisis, along with subtle nods to the game in Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, it’s looking more likely than ever that DoC, as well as Genesis, could be getting a long-awaited ‘Reunion’ with their fans, if you will. (I’m here all week, folks.)
