Halo Infinite gets surprise Gauntlet PvE mode six months after the last planned content update

Halo Infinite‘s road has been full of ups and downs, but in the end, enough players stuck around to warrant four years of active post-launch development. No more content updates were set to arrive after November 2025, yet the latest multiplayer Halo has just received a new patch which adds a PvE mode.

Firefight: Gauntlet is described as a “deviously difficult PvE mode” designed with the toughest Spartans in mind. Its basic features include “upgradeable attributes, elimination objectives, and auto-scaled difficulty settings to a boss-filled Firefight experience”. It’s also round-based, and it seems the only way to halt reinforcements is to slay the boss in each arena.

Gauntlet runs are made up of encounters across five different maps “connected by a supply area where you can gather ammo and equipment, roll for power weapons, or level up your personal buffs” before jumping into a new battle. It all sounds slightly inspired by the Call of Duty: Zombies modes if you ask me, and that isn’t a bad thing considering the potential player overlap. As a final note, the Halo Waypoint post reveals some of the famous Skull modifiers can be unlocked if the Fireteam is able to “retrieve the Oddball from the Harbinger”.

Last November’s Operation: Infinite introduced a final operation pass and plenty of cosmetics as Halo Studios’ final goodbye to the game. However, it clearly appears some sort of skeleton crew is still tinkering with the Forge tools and coming up with smaller bits of content which are worth adding to the official playlists.

At the time of writing, we know Halo: Campaign Evolved won’t feature competitive multiplayer and will instead focus on solo and co-op play, so Infinite might be the shiniest Halo PvP option for a good while still.
