Compared to the base Marvel Super Heroes Commander decks, the Collector’s Editions are unchanged in terms of cards included. You’ll still get the same 100-card decks featuring Commanders like the Fantastic Four, Black Panther, Dr. Doomday, and Captain America, as well as the useful double-sided tokens.

The difference, other than the staggering price increase, is the foil treatment the cards receive. In the regular versions, only the Legendary creatures that serve as your Commander have received the Borderless foil treatment. But in the Collector’s Edition decks, all 100 cards are now printed in Surge foiling, a premium, and admittedly gorgeous, foil style. Even the double-sided tokens are upgraded.

But if the decklists are unchanged, is it worth it to pay a much higher premium price just for prettier cards? Personally, I don’t think so. I’m the type of Magic player to be happy to just have a copy of the cards I need; I’m not much a money card chaser or collector, I much prefer to just find the cards I want to use and be done with it, especially while saving hundreds of dollars in the process.

But with Universes Beyond, Magic’s line of crossover products, the door’s been busted wide open for non-Magic players getting into the game to play with their favorite IPs. This is where I can understand if players do in fact want to pay the premium price; many folks grew up on Marvel Comics, and these characters are important to thousands of people around the world.
