Bungie has announced the release date for Marathon’s second season, which is bringing far-reaching progress wipes that’ll reset its playerbase to the same starting point.
As revealed in a short but info-laden trailer, season two kicks off 2nd June. When it does, every player’s runner level, rank, vault and loadout contents, credits, schemas, faction level & upgrades, and priority contracts will all be wound back to zero.
As for what you’ll keep in season two, access to unlocked factions will remain, as will earned and purchased cosmetics, codex entries, plus any LUX and Silk currency you have on your account. Your Vault size will be increased and faction progression will be sped up starting 2nd June, meaning it shouldn’t be too much of a grind this second time around.
Starting with season two, you can also claim a certain level of sponsored kit based on how high your runner lever was in season one. For example, if you manage to hit level 75 before the next season starts, you’ll get a free purple-rarity sponsored kit to help gear back up.
Marathon’s next season is called Nightfall, and while we don’t know a huge amount about what it’ll bring beyond the above, we do know that season one is ending with ramped up chaos and action.
Map events are guaranteed during each run starting the 19th May when the next patch goes live, and locked room keys will now always drop from computer-controlled Warden enemies if you can manage to take them down. UESC forces will be more present during matches too, with new Warden encounters across all maps (minus Cryo Archive) and a “new threat” on Dire Marsh aimed at adding an extra challenge.
Starting on 21st May, Cryo Archive will be accessible every day up until the start of season two. This means those who haven’t been able to get into all the vaults or unlock all the codex entries will have a larger window to do so. That’s dead handy, especially if there’s a challenge or two you wanted to cross off before your account gets reset.
Marathon, while excellent, hasn’t proven as popular as Sony expected, adding to a substantial $765m USD impairment loss last financial year. Here’s hoping season two can win people back to the sci-fi extraction shooter.
