Rumours of a third Ori game are “nonsense”, confirms series creator

Rumours of a new Ori game are “nonsense”, confirms series creator Thomas Maher.

In a post on social media, the CEO of Ori and the Will of the Wisps developer Moon Studios rebuked circulating whispers of a third entry in the beloved platforming adventure series, instead re-emphasising that work on the action-RPG No Rest for the Wicked continues in earnest. Rumours about a new game in the beloved Metroidvania series seemed to originate from a post over on Resetera, which then started making its way around social media platforms. But, it seems, there is no truth to any of it.

“I can confirm that the Ori 3 rumors are nonsense,” Maher wrote on X. “That said, I had Gareth [Coker] (composer for the Ori series) over for dinner a while ago since he was recording the No Rest for the Wicked Soundtrack in Vienna (you folks will love it!) and even he asked me if we’d be ready to do another one. ‘It’s time’, he said!”

The last game in the Ori series – Ori and the Will of the Wisps – was a direct sequel to 2017’s Ori and the Blind Forest, and launched in 2020 for Xbox One and PC. It was a good game, but launched in quite a rough state. Since then, the series has also come to Nintendo Switch but not PS5.

According to a 2022 report, Moon Studios was a toxic workplace environment beset with mismanagement issues during the development of the Ori series, which studio leads Maher and Korol rejected. Since then, the studio’s focus has been entirely on No Rest for the Wicked, which launched into Early Access in 2024.

That game launched a bit shakily, but over the past two years has earned a very positive player Steam review score through consistent gameplay improvements and major updates. That game is scheduled to release into 1.0 in October of this year for PC and PS5.
