The Last of Us Part 2 will get multiplayer later this year, but not from Sony, and sadly not on PS5 either

Multiplayer has been resurrected in The Last of Us Part 2. Not by Sony, sadly, but by an enterprising modder who’s released a new video showing some tense one-on-one shootouts.

Created by Specilizer, a creator with a history of making modifications to The Last of Us Part 2, the multiplayer kicks off with a September release date. The mod shows a lobby system as well as matches played out on both a custom map and a map pulled from the story.

In development since January of this year, this mod was made following the announcement of The Last of Us Online getting cancelled. That project, reportedly 80 percent complete by the time it was culled, had a loyal early base of players, many of whom were fans of the original Last of Us’ multiplayer game mode. Even former PlayStation president Shuhei Yoshida thought it was great! Alas, it was not to be.

There’s a series of videos documenting the development process of this multiplayer mod on Specilizer’s YouTube channel, which provides further insight into the why’s and how’s of this project. It’s been a fairly long journey to get to this point, but to see it finally almost playable is certainly tantalising.

If you’ve never played the multiplayer mode in the original Last of Us, it was a great singular experience that actually managed to work quite well within the original game’s engine. If you’re feeling curious, and have a PC that can handle its sequel, maybe this multiplayer mod is a great way to get into it later this year.
