A possible Steam controller release date has appeared online, indicating the much-anticipated hardware release from Valve may be about to hit the market.
In a now-hidden article by Japanese gaming outlet 4Gamer, the Steam Controller came with a 4th May release date. Whilst not confirmed by Valve, it’d certainly make sense for the release date to land soon: there have been hardware previews for the Steam Controller since last week, so it makes sense that the company is gearing up for a release soon.

The 4gamer leak comes after a couple of other bytes of information about the hardware cropped up over the past week or so. One gaffe came from the patent company itself, as Valve uploaded a currently-unviewable Steam Controller unboxing video to Steam a week ago, and there was also a massive shipment of wireless controllers discovered in public corporate shipping records earlier this month. Everything points to a reveal and release of the peripheral sooner, rather than later.
The Steam Controller is, of course, only one half of Valve’s upcoming hardware strategy. The Steam Machine, a console which has yet to receive a release date or price, will support 4K gaming at 60FPS with FSR. Valve has indicated its price will be more in line with the current PC market, which given current price hikes across the consumer tech industry, has left some anxious. The console has also been delayed due to RAM shortages, another hurdle Valve has had to surmount with its hardware rollout.
If you’re curious as to whether or not a Steam Controller is for you, Eurogamer’s own hands-off preview of the Steam Controller went through all of the controller’s features one-by-one.
