Nintendo has announced a price increase for the Switch 2. This follows reports Nintendo was facing pressure from investors to increase the price of its Switch 2 console, due to concerns about its profitability.
These increases will impact consumers in the US, Canada, Japan and Europe. In the US, Canada and Europe, Switch 2 price increases will come into effect from 1st September, with the changes listed below:
- US – from $449.99 to $499.99
- Canada – from $629.99 to $679.99
- Europe – from €469.99 to €499.99
In Japan, meanwhile, the price of the Switch 2 will increase from ¥49,980 to ¥59,980 from 25th May. The country will also see an increase in the price of the original Switch’s family of consoles, as well its Nintendo Switch Online subscription, in order to “support appropriate alignment among regions”.
Nintendo cited “changes in market conditions” as well as consideration of its “global business outlook” as the reason for these price increases. “We sincerely apologise for the impact these price revisions may have on our customers and other stakeholders, and we deeply appreciate your understanding,” the company said.
Nintendo is not the only company to have raised the price of its hardware in recent months. In March of this year, Sony announced significant price increases for its PlayStation range, which saw the cost of a base PS5 climb by around £90 in the UK. At this time, industry analyst and research director at Ampere Analysis Piers Harding-Rolls told Eurogamer it was likely that both Microsoft and Nintendo would follow suit, and increase their own prices in the near future. And now, Nintendo has for many regions.
Meanwhile, in April, head of Xbox Asha Sharma admitted the current price of RAM could lead to a price bump and limited stock where its next-gen console, Project Helix, is concerned.
