A fantastic-looking teaser trailer for a new Myst game has been released, though tragically we’ll never get to actually play it

Good news, puzzle lovers! A new teaser for a Myst game has been released online. Bad news, puzzle lovers! You’ll never get to play it: the game is cancelled.

In a new video released on the Cyan YouTube channel titled ‘A path not taken’, development director Hannah Gamiel and creative director Eric A. Anderson reveal more about the brain twister that could have been.

Here’s the teaser trailer – give it a look!Watch on YouTube

“Huge disclaimer: everything we’re about to show you is not actively in development, and will not be released in its current form,” says Gamiel. She says the team spent four months working on the Project Anglerfish prototype set within the Myst universe over a year ago. This trailer was intended for publisher-eyes only, until recently.

Sadly, this game was cancelled “for a variety of reasons” according to the pair. Though the team was proud of the work done, and therefore the trailer was released for the world as a nice public send-off for the project.

Anderson emphasised that the team at Cyan is still working on “new games and experiences” set inside the Myst universe, so it’s not all doom and gloom. Still, there’s a bittersweet feeling from seeing a cool looking trailer for a game you’ll never see.

As for what’s in the trailer itself, you can watch it above. It obviously looks beautiful, there are plenty of puzzles on display as the player explores subterranean pathways and hidden crevices in search of a mysterious book for a well-dressed and passionate benefactor. It all looks very interesting, and we’ll never be able to play it.
