Final Fantasy 14 comes to Switch 2 later this year with the now-famous free trial, but the file size is going to be absolutely massive

One of this year’s most surprising Nintendo Switch 2 port announcements was Final Fantasy 14’s back in April, and against all expectations, it was set to arrive in August. Now we know it’s right around the corner, and the Evercold expansion has received a big teaser trailer, too.

During the Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin, a five-minute ‘extended teaser trailer’ that sets the stage for the MMORPG’s next chapter – the start of the Goddless Realms Saga story arc – was shown alongside plenty of fresh details. Perhaps the most important one was the reveal of the Bastion, a new tank class “that wields a pair of greatshields known as skyltborg”.

Pre-orders for the Switch 2 version of the game, which is confirmed to launch on 4th August, were also opened. As a reminder, the ambitious port will require a separate monthly sub from the other versions of the game even if you’re using the same account, but it won’t require the usual Nintendo Switch Online membership that online games typically ask for. Those willing to pay two different FF14 subs will get a 50 percent discount on the Switch 2 one, though.

The better news is that FF14 on Switch 2 will also have the popular free trial – which includes quite a bit of content – in order to entice players who are on the fence. That said, anyone who’s looking to jump into the MMO on Nintendo’s hybrid console will need to liberate – according to the US eShop – 117.2 GB at launch. It’ll no doubt be one of Switch 2’s largest games, but if we look at FF7 Remake and Rebirth hovering around 90 GB, it seems more than reasonable for a massive MMO with a ridiculous amount of content.

Other Final Fantasy 14 reveals that came this past weekend include an Evangelion ‘Ghosts of Desire’ collaboration, the announcement of a new data centre system for improved connectivity and same-region player matching, and a planned crossover with the FF7 Remake trilogy.
