The DualSense Edge, Sony’s £200 / $200 pro-style controller for PlayStation 5 and PC, looks to be getting a revised model. That’s according to filings on the website of US government agency the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
As spotted by ResetEra, the new DualSense Edge’s model number is CFI-ZCP2, which is one number above the current CFI-ZCP1 model. So what might all this mean?
The running theory is that, rather than being a major design overhaul, CFI-ZCP2 will simply allow easier access to the Edge’s rechargeable lithium-ion battery so users can more easily replace it. This would ensure the controller complies with the European Union’s Right to Repair directive, which requires that consumer electronics makers allow customers to replace a device’s rechargeable battery on their own without the need to send the product back to its manufacturer.
The EU directive has already resulted in updated hardware designs elsewhere in gaming, chiefly with Nintendo’s Switch 2 and a number of its accessories. The law goes into effect in 2027, which appears to be when the new DualSense Edge model will be available. Some of the document names on the FCC’s page are locked until the end of January 2027, suggesting the controller will be revealed then. These documents reportedly include updated designs and a user manual, but they’re not yet available for the public to view.
When it does happen, this will be the first revision for the DualSense Edge controller since its release in early 2023. And, given the date on the FCC’s website, Sony might start talking about it in the near future.
