We’re still about six months out from the release of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the final part of the FF7 Remake trilogy. But, already, there is a lot of discussion about the size of the game; whether it’s all the divisive side activities on offer in the title, or the fact it won’t be shipping totally on-disc at launch thanks to the amount of stuff it’ll feature, director Naoki Hamaguchi is already fielding a lot of questions about ‘size versus quality’ in the last game in the Remake series.
In a new interview with VGC, the outspoken director notes that he’s “not worried about the scale”. He goes on to explain that the reason the game can’t ship on disc (or even two discs, like Rebirth did) is because he’s expecting the file size to be absolutely massive.
“Things are still getting worked out, but it’s probably going to be around 200GB of game,” he says to VGC. “I understand there are a lot of opinions about this topic, but at the end of the day, the fact is we need to overcome the hardware to a certain extent.”
Rebirth weighs in at 145.2GB on Switch 2 and PS5 (and 91GB on Xbox, 155GB on PC), so depending on format, Revelation looks set to be twice as large as the last game in the series. Woof. The game will also receive two bonus DLC packages post-launch, and these will be similar in size to Remake’s Intermission DLC, per Hamaguchi. “It’s best to imagine the DLC like what we did with Intermission: digging deeper into the characters of Vincent and Sephiroth. In regard to whether those stories take place in the past or the present, I’m not going to tell you that now, but we’re excited to reveal that.”
As the sort of sicko that routinely goes over 100 hours for my RPG reviews, I must say this both excites and terrifies me. For consumers, I have seen a lot of discussion this week about game length, thanks to the previously-linked Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave review – it seems, understandably, that games with a runtime of over 100 hours are simply too demanding for many adults with lives, jobs, and responsibilities to consider.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches 8th April, 2027 for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, and I’m curious to see if the trilogy will be able to stick the landing, or whether the whole thing will crumble under the weight of all this open world ambition. I’ve spoken to Hamaguchi about this before, and his answers to my concerns about open world game design put my mind at ease, at least.
