Guild Wars 3 has been announced at Summer Game Fest. It will be playable through a beta come fall 2027.
The MMORPG will be an “evolution” of the MMO genre, according to ArenaNet’s CEO Colin Johanson who spoke a few words on stage. The trailer itself shows some open world navigation, with a character running up a a sheer cliff face.
Developed by ArenaNet, the game is a sequel to the beloved Guild Wars 2, which remains a popular online game roughly 14 years after its release.
It’s described as having comabt that will “usher in an entirely new type of MMO experience”, with movement powered by momentum. It seems like it could be a major deviation from the typical MMORPG affair Guild Wars 2 is, but that’s not a huge surprise considering how much of a leap Guild Wars 2 was away from the original Guild Wars.
The game has been long speculated due to a string of hirings at ArenaNet, all for unnamed, unannounced projects. In addition, ArenaNet has been pumping a lot more money into marketing, having released a trailer for the current Guild Wars 2 expansion at a major game showcase, and putting out an excellent Guild Wars documentary.
This is quite the bombshell reveal, it’s safe to say. You can wishlist Guild Wars 3 now, and sign up for a newsletter on the Guild Wars 3 website.
