Despite controversial reviews and online mockery, Marvel’s Wolverine looks to have sold 1.9m on PS5 – and over 1 in 5 sales are physical

Marvel’s Wolverine has been in the hot seat over the last week or so, but mixed reviews and internet memes seemingly haven’t put a dent in the superhero game’s adamantium frame. A new report states the latest from Insomniac Games has already sold almost 2m copies, with more than a fifth coming from physical sales.

Alinea Analytics’ Rhy Elliot today reported that Marvel’s Wolverine has moved around 1.9 copies in its first three days and, thus, dropped a fat bag of cash into PlayStation’s lap. The figure apparently includes a million copies that came from pre-launch digital pre-orders. Altogether, the divisive action game’s made upwards of $130m so far.

While Sony itself plans on ending production of discs for new PlayStation games in 2028, there seems to be plenty of demand for physical versions of its new blockbuster. According to the report, 22.9% of sales came from physical editions.

Interestingly, Marvel’s Wolverine’s physical-to-digital ratio is slightly heavier on the digital side than some of the PS5’s other big hitters. A previous Alinea Analytics report claimed Insomniac Games’ last superpowered romp, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, made 35% of its PS5 revenue from physical sales. Around 46% of Astro Bot‘s sales also came from disc-based copies, while Ghost of Yotei‘s physical split was 37.6%.

Keep in mind, Marvel’s Wolverine hasn’t been on store shelves for very long at all and the holiday season could well make a difference in that percentage split over the coming weeks and months.

Regardless, Logan’s early success already has him leaping, claws out, over almost every other PlayStation Studios game this year, too – Marvel’s Wolverine’s impressive 1.9m haul puts it above Saros, Marathon and Marvel Tokon. The vast majority of people who bit the bullet for Logan previously played Marvel’s Spider-Man (82%) and Spider-Man 2 (70%), as well. There’s also quite a bit of interesting overlap between Marvel Rivals players and Wolverine’s new standalone adventure – 43% of players have touched the hit hero shooter.

It’s still early days for Marvel’s Wolverine, of course, but it looks like the divisive conversation around the game hasn’t hurt sales all too much. Take a look at any number of gaming-centric online forums and you’ll most likely find a couple threads mocking the game’s persistent ‘fart scent’ trail or hand-holdy design. Eurogamer’s Wolverine review called it “just fine.”
