Is Morrowind the new Doom? After getting a dual-screen port, the fan-favourite Elder Scrolls is now running in browsers

Last week, we reported on a dual-screen port of Morrowind for the AYN Thor handheld. Fans of the third Elder Scrolls aren’t stopping there though, as someone has now made Morrowind fully playable in your browser.

Reddit user Dumpster_Buddy shared their achievement, which runs on OpenMW – the open source Morrowind engine ambitious modders are using these days – and can be accessed on this page. As seen in the description and described by the creator, there’s a free ‘example world’ that’s fully functional and requires no install of the game. However, to play the whole thing, you’ll need to point the site to your game folder.

“It’s the actual engine, not a stream and not an emulator, so shadows, water, saves and gamepads all work,” they added. And if you were wondering about how your Morrowind files are used if you choose to play the full game on the webpage, they said that “nothing gets uploaded. Desktop Chrome, Edge, or Brave work best right now.” Moreover, they’re planning to add new features to it over time, maybe even online multiplayer. As always, sky is the limit for modders who are into Bethesda’s games.

Of course, having to run the game off your own files doesn’t make the port as useful as it sounded at first, but you have to consider the potential legal issues of such an endeavour. Regardless, you could theoretically just chuck the required files into a drive to play Morrowind quickly on a work computer without installing it. Not that I’m recommending anyone to waste their company’s precious time. I’m just thinking out loud.

In my own experience, it runs alright even if the mouse clicks often aren’t registered where they should, which makes navigating the menus a bit of a pain in the arse. As a cool curiosity and yet another example of the Elder Scrolls community’s ingenuity, however, it’s pretty amazing. I can see new fan projects ramping up in the coming months as we await news on The Elder Scrolls 6 following Bethesda’s big roadmap reveal.
