Resident Evil 4 is by far and away the best-selling remake on this console generation, new analysis reveals

We’ve known for a while that the 2023 Resident Evil 4 remake has been one of Capcom’s best-selling titles, but how does it stack up against all the other remakes released on the current console generation? Pretty well, it turns out.

That’s according to new data from market analysis firm Alinea, which revealed that Resident Evil 4 is currently the best-selling remake on PC, PlayStation and Xbox.

The tracking period starts with the launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in November 2020, and extends to the current day. Alinea estimates the game has sold a whopping 16.8m copies. The lead platform is PlayStation, where it has sold 7.4m of those copies, followed closely by Steam with 6.8m, and lastly Xbox with just 1.6m.

According to Alinea’s estimates, the Resident Evil 4 remake has generated $560m in gross revenue for Capcom since its release. Once again, most of that was on PlayStation with 53.1 percent, followed by 34.1 percent on Steam, and 12.8 percent on Xbox. As the report noted, Steam tends to generate less money per copy due to the store’s regional pricing, as well as its big discounts during seasonal sales.

Unsurprisingly, that pricing strategy has done very well in regions with lower prices. China, Brazil and Russia are all in the top five territories for Resident Evil 4, according to the report

That long tail of sales on Steam can also be explained by looking at the platform’s share of revenue at the remake’s launch compared to the current day. The report noted that Steam accounted for 28 percent of launch day revenue, compared to 34.1 percent today. In other words, regular sales and regional prices helped Capcom maintain a strong momentum in places traditional console stores – and their far smaller discounts and less frequent sales – have historically been unable to reach.

Other notable remakes Alinea also cited in the report include Ark: Survival Ascended at an estimated 7m copies, followed by The Last of Us: Part 1 at 6.3m, Oblivion Remastered at 4.5m, and the Dead Space remake rounding out the top five with 4.3m.

This makes the recent success of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced notable, as it has already sold over 3.5m copies in its first two weeks. By the end of the year, that figure will likely climb, to say nothing of how the tally is going to look a year or two from now.
